What is MAXI/GUARD Oral Gel?
-MAXI/GUARD Oral Gel is the compound zinc ascorbate/Taurine in a muco-adhesive gel. The white granules attached to the bottle is Vitamin C. The vitamin granules help keep the product fresh and stable.

– MAXI/GUARD helps prevent plaque build up. It does not remove hardened tartar or calculus.
– MAXI/GUARD works as a rinse, with brushing, applied with gauze pad or by just your index finger. Pre moistened wipes are also available.
- Cats: use 1 drop for each side of the mouth
- Sm-Med Dogs: use 2 drops for each side
- Lg Dogs: application directly from bottle is often easiest
– Unmixed MAXI/GUARD has a shelf life of up to 3 years. Mixed product will last approx. 6 months in a cool dark cabinet or up to 1 yr in the fridge.
– MAXI/GUARD is safe and effective as long as it remains a blue or green colour, a yellow or brown colour indicates a loss of effectiveness but is still safe.
– Contact with white hair coats and light coloured fabrics should be avoided as it may temporarily leave a yellowish stain.
How does MAXI/GUARD work:
The sulfur amino acid chelates with malodorus sulfur compounds and oxidizes volatile fatty acids in the mouth. This provides a rapid (after 30 sec) reduction of halitosis. Zinc ascorbate in combination with sulfur amino acid work together to repair tissue and stop permeability of the tissue to macormolecular materials such as bacterial toxins. When that tissue, instead of degrading it, there is less dead tissue substrate to support the growth of proteolytic bacteria. Therefore, you lower the level of harmful organisms. This helps interrupt the deposition of plaque significantly. Additionally, the zinc ascorbate will permeate plaque and oxidize the anaerobic bacteria. This helps remove plaque and reduce proteolytic enzymes (another source of halitosis).
Zinc toxicity concerns:
MAXI/GUARD’s zinc ascorbate/sulfur amino acid formulation has been in veterinary dentistry use for over 23 years without incident. Laboratory evaluations demonstrate that dosing twice per day at the recommended small volume will deliver considerably less Zn mg intake than recognized toxic levels or even the required daily intake from diet. Natural oral compounds like zinc/Taurine are generally recognized as the safest approach to oral care, especially in animals where the product is ingested.
